Filming

To film, I used a canon 800D DSLR camera for the main interviews and some of the b-roll; I used a Nikon D3300 to get an alternate angle during the interviews, and to film the majority of the b-roll. I used the Nikon D3300 for the b-roll because it is a lot lighter than the Canon 800D and I was able to be a lot more mobile and move around to get different shots. Both cameras were mounted on tripods for the filming of the interview which helped in capturing steady footage. This was a huge help in editing where I cut clips together, the visuals of the shots in post-production didn’t look too dissimilar so it allowed for a flow of narrative instead of choppy cut edits. The interviews were shot in two locations, I wanted to film in two different main environments: a plain studio back, and a ‘home’ setting. Initially the interview was going to be filmed in the ‘studio’ and I wasn’t going to rely on the visual shots as I planned to shoot a lot of b-roll with India another time. The time allocation in the ‘studio’ meant that I ran out of time before I was able to ask India all the questions I aimed to ask, so I was (luckily) able to continue the interview the following day in the ‘home’ location before India had to go home herself. I had just over a day with India to get all the footage I needed; at the time I had planned to regroup with India a couple of weeks later to film her in her home town driving, walking, shopping to shoot b-roll footage. This unfortunately never materialised due to the restrictions of travel surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic that was enforced just a week after I filmed with India. If were able to improve or redo this video project in the future I would definitely film a lot more b-roll, and use lighting fixtures to improve the light quality in some filming locations.
